Last Sunday, EGHC Ladies 1st Team made a 3rd appearance at finals day in 4 seasons. Back in 2015 the Ladies made their first appearance, as losing finalists, followed by the amazing 2016 result where they finished Champions for the first time, part of an amazing double with the Men.
In 2016 the girls didn't quite make finals day but did achieve Bronze in their first European adventure. After a break from finals day they returned on Sunday January 28th...
The 2016 season had been a mixed experience; disappointment of not making it to Wembley was somewhat compensated by a fabulous experience in Lithuania competing in the European competition they'd qualified for by virtue of their previous year's achievements. That European adventure had been a major motivator for this season's ambitions.
With the arrival of several new faces enabling some of the regular 1st team outdoor squad to take a Christmas break, the Indoor side performed exceptionally well in the regular league season, finishing at the top and earning a place in the first semi-final of the day on Sunday 28th January.
Their opponents, Leicester, were the only side EG had not managed to win against in the regular season. Starting the game on Sunday morning, the team began more tentatively than might have been expected and conceded a relatively early goal to Leicester in the first half.
As the half and the game progressed, EG got stronger and stronger, with at least 3 chances missing the opposition far post by a whisker. During the second half EG were awarded a penalty stroke but as with the missed chances, it was not EG's day and the stroke followed the same path, just wide of the left post.
Towards the end of the game, trailing just 0:1, the girls sacrificed their 'keeper to add an extra outfield player, but Leicester were ready and managed to secure the win with two late goals in the final two minutes. Indoor hockey can be cruel sometimes.
Just as with our Girls U18 squad the previous week, there were many positives to be taken with several of the younger squad members catching the eye of England Hockey hierarchy.
