News & Notes…
Happy New Year to all and welcome to the first results roundup of 2018.
Thanks in part to adverse weather, just a handful of games in the final 2 weeks before Christmas.
Goals from Jez Subedar and Julian Mills led the Vets back to the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Tulse Hill in their game in hand. Mikey Holland was held scoreless for the first time this season, his scoring streak snapped at 10.
A Julian Mogg brace helped the Saints to their first win of the season, a 4-0 victory over Maidenhead; Bram van Asselt and Tony Holland added a goal each, and Giles Dakin held firm to claim the Saints first clean sheet.
Back from the New Year to a reduced schedule last weekend, and the Ladies 2's continued their recent good form with a 3-0 Sussex Cup Quarter Final victory over old friends Lewes. They'll now face Brighton in the Semi Final in April.
Both Bluebirds and Badgers squads opened 2018 with victories, over Burgess Hill and Worthing respectively, but the Men's 3's dropped a Cup / League double header by a combined 0-12, whilst a spirited 4's side went down 1-3 to South Saxons.
But the main storyline has unfolded indoors, as the men's indoor squad rebounded from a tough opening weekend to finish 5-2-1 with 44 goals scored to 27 conceded, placing 2nd in the league phase and securing another appearance at Final's day at the end of the month.
They'll be joined there for the third time by the Ladies squad who were dominant in claiming their maiden league title, going 7-0-1 with 36 for and 15 against.
Congratulations to both squads!

U16G 8-0 Reigate Priory (Home Counties League)
U14G 1-7 London Wayfarers (Home Counties League)
U14B 11-4 Old Georgians (Mercian League)
U14B 8-2 Marden Russetts (Mercian League)
U14 Crocs 3-2 Reigate Priory (Mercian League)
In their first match after the Christmas break the EG Crocs (U12's) secured a late victory against an U14 development side from Reigate with a final score line of 3-2. In a fairly evenly matched game, that saw the burning off an any excess mince pies following the festive season, the boys played well. The match saw rapid changes of direction and some quick attacking breaks from the Reigate side who were significantly greater in stature than the majority of our Crocs team. The highlight of the match was a spectacular diving save from Harry Thomas right across the goal line to cheers from the watching crowd. A good start to the second half of the hockey season.

U12 Boys – Tony Smith Tournament;
On what was a very wet and cold Sunday afternoon a group of 'up for it' parents and coaches took a small team of U12's to Surbiton to play in the Annual Tony Smith U13's Plate competition.
Despite the hour delay when we arrived to discover they were running late, the boys remained in good spirits under coats and umbrellas in the pouring rain (not sure the same was universally true for the parents…)
The boys started well with a solid 5 - 1 win against their first team, Wayfarers U12's and they followed this up with consecutive wins against Surbiton, Old Loughtonians and Wimbledon to finish top of their group.
They then beat the Leopards in their semi finals to make the final.
In the final they played the (also) unbeaten Guildford team who provided their toughest match, but with great spirit (and passing!) they managed to win the final 1-0 to lift the trophy.
A huge congratulations to the team for playing so well in difficult conditions, they dominated each game and some very impressive displays of skill and team work were on show. Particularly impressive result in an U13 competition for an U12 side. We'll be back next year, only then the boys will have their eye on the cup trophy rather than the plate!
