We are pleased to announce the signing of Tijn van Groesen from Union HC in Holland for the 2017/18 season...
Tijn, 20, joins EG from Union HC where he played for one season, he had previously been at Den Bosch since he was born. At his boyhood club he played with current EG player Dom Bowden. Not only will he be an asset in the forward line outdoor but also indoor, having played for the Dutch national team indoor in the 2016/17 season.
We spoke to Tijn earlier about his move to EG:
Tijn, congratulations - how does it feel to play for East Grinstead?
Tijn van Groesen: I am delighted to play for EG as it is a club with a great history and is known around Europe, so many great players have played here and developed here and I hope to do the same.
What about East Grinstead appeals to you?
TvG: When I first came to the club I was impressed with the facilities and the management team around the First team, I can also learn a lot from the great players with lots of experience of international hockey, I also look forward to playing under Glenn, I have heard great things about him as a player and as a leader.
Can you tell us a bit about your playing style and what we can expect to see from you?
TvG: I think I am a technical player, I like to do the basics well. My strengths are dribbling, shooting and my close control in the D. I would like to bring lots of goals to the team and create lots of goalscoring chances for my teammates, including winning corners for them.
What is your secret to good finishing and do you have any advice for the youngsters hoping to score goals?
TvG: I always look at the positioning of the Goalkeeper and try to put it in with accuracy and not necessarily power. I always try to stay as calm as possible and I don't rush my shot or put myself under too much pressure. Also for the youngsters, when someone is in a better position than you, no matter who it is, you should always pass it, as it is about the team winning not how many goals each player scores.
Do you have a message for the EG fans?
TvG: I want to give 100% every time I am on the pitch for EG. I would like to show everyone that I am worthy of playing for such a great club. I want to make sure the team wins and that we can get back to winning titles in England.
Tijn will make his Men's Hockey League Premier Division debut on the 23rd of September against Holcombe at Saint Hill.
