It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that our friend and former member, Andy Bass, passed away suddenly around last Friday.  Andy was a dear friend and past captain of several EGHC sides, including the Veterans and appears to have passed away in his sleep.

Andy will be greatly missed as a friend and fellow hockey player and will be remembered by those priveleeged to have known him as a true gentleman with a great sense of humour and as somebody that always had a story to tell.

Once the arrangements have been made for the funeral / celebration of his life, we will inform you of the time and place.

Our thoughts go to his family who are greatly sadenned by his passing and we all will miss him terribly.

On behalf of family and friends.

As we rapidly approach February and the "run in" towards the end of the 2015 / 2016 Hockey Season, we would like to communicate that our Chairman, Simon Longhurst intends to stand down at our forthcoming AGM, following six years in the role.  The AGM is scheduled for April 28th 2016.

Over recent years, East Grinstead Hockey Club has developed significantly.  Our Junior Section has grown in numbers, our Ladies' 1st Team compete at the same level as the Men's 1st Team Indoors and Outdoors and the core of the club has become overall younger while rising up the local hockey leagues.  In parallel with this the club has raised its profile, introduced a number of innovations and strengthened its financial management to enable long term infrastructure improvement.

The scale and complexity to which the club has grown is the outcome of work by a strong and driven volunteer group.  In order to best manage a handover of the Chairmanship carefully, the Committee has co-opted Chris Gregory into the post of "Chairman Designate" and he has already participated in a number of Committee Meetings in 2016.

Chris began to Chair the Board from our most recent meeting on Friday January 22nd, and will do so until the AGM where the membership will be able to elect the new Committee in the usual way.  Chris has been a member of the club for 40 years and was the Chairman of the Sports Club from 2000 to 2005.  He will work closely with Simon and the existing Committee to finalise the update to EGHC's Governance, Operational and Financial structures with a view to spreading and sharing the workload among the volunteers in the club.  Chris has commented "The Club has grown to such an extent under Simon's leadership and needs to ensure the innovations put in place are exploited while continuing to look for ways to improve the management of the club's affairs.  There is such a new and diverse set of challenges involved in operating our club now, ranging from running the "heart and soul" of the club for the women and men and our large and growing junior membership, to operating the high performance 1st XIs, and developing our own new EGHC Academy.  These are exciting times for the Hockey Club as it continues to grow and develop."

Simon has commented "I have been honoured to be asked to chair EGHC's Committee and to work with such a focused and committed group of Committee members and volunteers since 2010.  What that group has achieved together is quite simply staggering; including the growth of our junior section from approximately 60 members to where it stands today, hosting two European Club tournaments in 2012 and 2014, elevating our Ladies' 1st team up 5 levels both indoors and outdoors to reach dual premiership status, maintaining a high level of performance in our Mens' 1st Team, replacing our astroturf in 2013 and providing the financial foundations to do the same in eight to ten years time.  I would like to thank all those volunteers who have helped in the development of the club.  Without such a talented group the club would not have achieved so much.  The opportunity to handover the Chairmanship to Chris Gregory is immensely important for our club:  a seasoned Financial Director, an Honorary Vice President of the club and a part of the fabric of our club for many years, Chris will bring a blend of skills and experience that will help us maintain our momentum as we constantly develop and grow.  I look forward to working with Chris during this handover period and supporting various facets of EGHC moving forward."

Chris adds by commenting on Simon's contribution as Chairman "On behalf of the club we cannot thank Simon enough for all the time and effort he has put into the club's affairs.  It has been an extraordinary period in the history of East Grinstead Hockey Club and his leadership and innovation has moved the club into a new dimension where we must now try to capitalise on that platform."

The EGHC 2015 Annual Awards Event will take place in the Lingfield Bar on Saturday April 25th.  The evening will begin at 7pm with Awards Ceremony starting at 7:30.  Tickets can be booked from our online store HERE !

Its been an amazing season; lets recognise the achievements of our members, coaches, managers and volunteers...

Dear Members and Friends of East Grinstead Hockey Club,

You will all have become aware over the last few hours and days that EGHC is in the process of launching its own Hockey Academy.  We're very excited about this new development.  It has long been felt that a club with the ambitions of EGHC should have its own academy as our vision is about Elite, Grass Roots and Sport for All for boy and girls / men and women.

An important principle with The Academy is that it is truly an EGHC Academy.  That means EGHC is involved in leading it, defining its strategy, and in conducting the day and residential academies.  Our branding has the words "East Grinstead Hockey Club" and so it is clear that we need to be true to the values and philosophies of East Grinstead Hockey Club, as well as our partner, Worth School.  This means we want to encourage more youngsters to play with the philosophy that EG does, and that we are looking to play our role in building more hockey skills in our area - being a better member of the hockey family.

The members and friends of EGHC - you all - are an inspiring group of people.  In the past decade the club has achieved alot through its members, volunteers, sponsors and friends.

  • In 2005, around the same time London was awarded the 2012 Olympic Games, the Mens 1st team regained its Premier League Status
  • Soon after, the Ladies 1st team began their journey towards National League status which they achieved in 2013
  • The men have achieved incredible Indoor success
  • The Ladies have reached their first national Indoor final and are competing Indoor at the same level as the Men
  • Our Girls U18 have reached multiple national finals and learned what it feels like to win
  • Our minis have participated in and won numerous mini tournaments
  • Our Junior Section has grown
  • Our coaching has improved and our ambition to continue to improve it continues to grow
  • We became the first and only British Club to host the Euro Hockey League in October 2012
  • We became the first British Club to host the Euro Hockey Indoor Club Champions Cup in February 2014
  • We replaced our pitch in 2013, and have made improvements to the club facilities

Of course, there are many more things we need to work on, but we should be pleased with the progress we are making.

The committee and volunteer group owes it to the membership to continue to create an environment where members can be individually and collectively successful, and where our next generation can do the same, and the ones after that.

The EGHC Hockey Academy is a big piece of our strategy; it will benefit the members, teams, the club and hockey enthusiasts in our region.  It will benefit schools and hopefully other clubs in our region as well.  It will be a part of the puzzle that enables us to compete at every level, to invest in the club to improve financial sustainability and to improve our core offering to members.

You can stay up to date with the academy as follows:   and then choose academy from the menu bar along the top

Please like and follow so we can make this the success that EGHC needs it to be !

Thankyou to the members and friends of EGHC for helping make the above things happen; lets see if we can make the next step in our journey with a strong, vibrant and thriving EGHC Hockey Academy !

The weekend saw the first of the women's Conference sides qualify for the Promotion Play-offs.

Although there was little doubt that East Grinstead in the East Conference would make it, their top-place finish was confirmed by their 0-7 win at Ipswich, and a little help from St Albans who beat second-place Sevenoaks 2-1.

Investec Women's Conference East: Another hat-trick from Great Britain striker Sophie Bray fired East Grinstead to a 7-0 win over Ipswich and clinched the title for the Sussex outfit. Horsham remain rooted to the bottom of the table after defeat by Wimbledon, but remain within striking distance of second-bottom Bedford.

EAST Grinstead confirmed their place in the championship play-offs but securing automatic qualification for Europe remains their main objective. A 3-2 win at home to third-placed Beeston moved Grinstead on to level points with leaders Surbiton with four games of the regular season to play.
