Home Club Bromley & Beckenham HC
Throughout my school hockey career, I have flirted with representative national sides, which is where I first met current squad mates; Paddy Smith, Simon Faulkner, Dom Bowdon, Chris Griffiths and David Condon. At the age of 18 I made the decision not to join a "top tier" sports university and prioritise my education, however, it was during my time as a graduand at the University of Manchester that I gained my first Premier League cap and goal at Brooklands MU HC.
After graduating as a civil engineer, I moved back home to London and began a doctorate at University College London, re-joining my childhood club - Bromley & Beckenham HC. Sadly, after a challenging season, the 1st XI were relegated from the competitive East Conference in 2016. It was that summer I decided to return back to a Premier League side and push myself back into contention as an elite player.
It is fair to say that it was an easy decision to join East Grinstead HC; a big club, well structured, with high ambitions. Since joining, I have now played under two coaches in Karl Stagno and Glenn Kirkham – both of the top pedigree and to whom I owe a lot. The 1st XI environment is a competition one, full of performance players who demand a consistent high level of quality from themselves and others. Stepping back into this environment, for someone outside of the centralised programme and the Loughborough, Durham and Birmingham graduate circles, took time to adapt. However, I feel we have a good balance of competiveness and team spirit, not something that is always present !
There has been a considerable amount of change in my short two years here at East Grinstead, but at present we have a young and talented squad, who had a strong pre-season and are looking for play-offs as a minimum ! My personal ambitions are to continually improve, hold down a starting position and push my team mates towards group success. We have a great support team here in Jimmy and Luke Leman and Prashant Meshram – who couldn't do more for us and are a huge part of this team !
Since passing my doctorate, I have taken up a role within the tech industry. Work/life balance is a challenge for everybody and one that is vitally important for all of our players. The support team here around the 1st XI have been a great help with providing flexibility and an understanding of the workloads upon young professionals working in and around London.
Team sport at the top level is always decided by fine margins, sometimes these go against you. The season is a long one, but despite our disappointing opening game against Brooklands MU HC, we did well against Holcombe and as a team we intend to try and pick up momentum.
