Pancreatic Cancer Action
Five year survival rates for pancreatic cancer have not changed in over 40 years and with a strong focus on early diagnosis, it is our mission to change this by way of increased awareness of pancreatic cancer within the general population, the medical community and the Government.
We are developing educational programmes for trainee General Practitioners and are working on creating an e-learning module alongside the Royal College of GPs aimed at practicing clinicians; to help them spot the disease earlier and manage the condition better.
Pancreatic cancer, despite being the 5th commonest cause of cancer death in the UK, receives only 1% of overall research funding. This has to change and we are working hard to increase the overall level of funding both for pancreatic cancer so that condition can be better known, better understood and better treated. Simply, our aim is to get more people diagnosed in time for surgery - currently the only potential for a cure.

East Grinstead Hockey Club is very active. It has 200 junior members and a thriving adult section, with five men's teams and four ladies teams, as well as veterans. It is in the top eight of the Euro Hockey League and has produced many role models and local heroes. Last week the Club held a meeting to outline their plans to host a Euro hockey tournament at the end of October this year. Around the table were senior representatives from the Euro Hockey League together with district and town councillors, business representatives and Glenn Kirkham, who is vice-captain of the Great Britain hockey team. Simon Longhurst, the Chairman of East Grinstead Hockey Club, should be applauded for his vision, determination and hard work in putting together a bid to host the tournament. It would be the first time the tournament is held in the UK and would be very timely, coming shortly after the Olympics. It offers the opportunity to put East Grinstead and West Sussex on the map, which in turn would help boost the local economy. To me this is a fine example of community action. A vision driven by a dedicated member of the public to promote a sport and in doing so, encouraging healthy living, a boost the economy and involving the wider community. This is why I support East Grinstead Hockey Club's bid and really wish Simon all the best in making this vision into reality.
Best wishes, Louise
