With great sadness, we have learned of the death of Club Vice President Arthur Rackstraw.

Arthur Gerard Rackstraw, known as Rackers to his friends, died peacefully on the 7th September from liver cancer, at home, surrounded by his family and his trusty dog.

He was 71 years old, and had been a member of EGHC since the mid-sixties, in which time he played for all XI's, and Captained the 2's, 3's, and Vets.

He took up umpiring for a while until moving to Nottingham, and continued to support the 1's whenever they played in the Midlands. When he returned back to Sussex, he was a frequent spectator.

Arthur has left an indelible mark on our Hockey Club, having been Project manager on the building of the original squash courts (now the Gym), and then the building of the current clubhouse and sports hall.

With this wealth of knowledge he most recently served as a Trustee of East Grinstead Sports Club, and was instrumental in obtaining planning permission for the new LED floodlights. He was involved also in sorting out the "odd leak" on the roof of the clubhouse.

He will be missed not only for his knowledge, but for his compassion and friendship.
