East Grinstead Men won the national indoor title for the first time in 1986 leading to inclusion in an unofficial European tournament held at Amiens in 1987. Led by Richard Leman (Golden Olympian, 1988), EG won through a tight semi-final against the Swiss, only to lose to the hosts Amiens in the final.
The first half of the 1990s saw a great rivalry develop on an annual basis with St Albans at the atmospheric Crystal Palace for the national indoor finals. By the time EG won their second national indoor title in 1993, the Germans had joined the now official European Cup for clubs. Travelling to Cologne in 1994, the first game was against the hosts and an introduction to German club hockey - Volker Fried (Olympic Gold and two time Silver medallist) and his team ran out 7-4 winners. This was followed by another great game against the Poles who edged it 7-5 in the end.
During this period, there were also regular appearances at the Glenfiddich International tournament, including some great contests against the likes of MIM from Scotland and from Harvestehuder. The second half of the decade saw a complete retirement of the early 90’s team, but “EG” regrouped and managed to stay in the Premier Division – still the only team in the country to have remained in the Premier Division since the inception of the National Indoor League.
A decade later however, after steady development for a number of years, EG gained their next national title in 2006 and three years later saw the start of a run of titles that eventually saw EG accumulate the 14 the men have secured to date. European competition follows each English title, in the Eurohockey Indoor Club Champions Trophy and then the top tier, pitting our wits against the best indoor club teams. As part of this development, the club has had the pleasure of the likes of Olympic champions Martin Haner and Mats Grambusch from Germany in their colours (both Captains of Germany), as well as Filip Neusser of the Czech Republic keeping goal on occasion (rated the world's best Indoor 'keeper.
Our under 18 girls won the national title for the first time in 2013 and in 2014 secured a silver. They regained the gold medal at Nottingham University in January 2024 with another National Title. In 2014 EG Women competed in the Premier Division for the first time in the club’s history, coming a creditable fifth just one point from qualifying for the Top 4 play-offs at the first attempt. Just one year later, in January 2015, East Grinstead Women participated in their first National Indoor Final, losing to Bowdon. The following year EG Women went one better, securing the title. This was followed by another in 2019, and then in 2022, 2024 and 2025. The 2019 Title was special as it saw both EG Men and Women secure their respective titles on the same day; a feat not achieved since the 1980s by Slough.
As with the Men, each English Title is followed by European competition and in February 2026, EG Women will compete in the EuroHockey Indoor in Poland. Email us to enquire
