EG Ladies have started the season well, with wins home and away in their opening two matches. Saturday saw their second home match of the season, hosting Buckingham in the England Hockey Premier League.
The game started with both sides evenly matched, both teams testing the opposition's 'keeper. EG had a number of attacks with Lydia MacDonnell, Ellie Rayer and Sophie Bray creating a number of half chances. Bukcingham's defence stood firm however and the teams we tied at 0:0 at the end of the fist quarter.
The second quarter sw green cards for both sides, in the 20th and 22nd minutes as the game started to come alive. However although EG continued to attack, they couldn't break down the Buckingham defence. The second quarter appeared to be heading for a similar outcome, but in added time at the end of the quarter, Buckingham broke the deadlock with a goal to go in 1:0 ahead at half-time.
The third quarter passed by without a goal but again characterised by EG pushing hard to get back on terms. Several corners presented great opportunities for EG but to no avail.
The final quarter however saw an exciting finish to the game, with Ellie Rayer putting EG back on terms in the 58th minute. A rasping back hand shot from open play fired into the bottom right corner giving Ellie her first league goal of the season. With 12 minutes to go, EG pushed for the winner, while fighting to stop Buckingham from doing the same. EG nearly managed to secure the win with corners, several attacks down the right from Amy Costello and a Sophie Bray effort that struck the left post.
Closing out the game with a 1:1 draw, the Ladies now look to their next match, away at Surbiton next weekend. Match photos are at the following link:
